Island Guitar Studios - Guitar Lessons

Guitar Refresher Lessons and Guitar/ Performance Coaching are for experienced players from Intermediate to Advanced. In person, or by Zoom. I prefer in person at the studio.

You know who you are. You will know if this is for you. I have helped players of may styles. From those almost ready for their first gig, to the Professional Musicians already gigging. From Local to Touring Musicians.

Some may be having problems with a particular song, some petrified with stage fright, some ready to learn to play lead guitar, some interested in basic theory and how it applies to the guitar, and more.

Ask yourself, what is my goal? Some players may only need an hour of my time and they are good to go. Others may want to come every week for a few weeks. Others once a month or once every few months. We will usually both know when your goal has been met. Do you have any other goals?

Here are my recommendations for getting past Stage Fright. We all had it at one time.

Be familiar with the venue and the style of music they will be expecting. If possible visit the venue and talk to the manager.

Have friends there.

Other Tips:

  • Be familiar with your material! Know the chords and lyrics to the set list!
  • Be satisfied that your guitar is in tune! Stretch and bend the strings until it stays in tune. Check after every song.
  • Be sure to install a new battery if your guitar uses one.
  • Be satisfied with your Tone. Very Important! If your Tone sounds off to you, try to get it right. If not, you will loose any confidence you may have and your playing will be sub par and below your ability.
  • If possible have a Sound Check or use a song not on your set list as song number one to tweak the mix.
  • Be satisfied with the Mix. All venues are acoustically different.
  • Make sure you can hear the monitors, regardless of type.
  • Remember, you are providing background music while the patrons talk and relax. It is that simple.
  • No one is going to pay that much attention to you ..Relax!.
  • Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself for playing the wrong chord or forgetting the lyrics. Everyone does it! Even the Pros. And the Pros laugh it off. So laugh at yourself.
  • Be ready for requests that you don't know and offer alternatives, or offer to "fake it". Then learn those requested songs.
  • Be confident. Smile often. Relax.
  • You may receive little to zero applause. Don't take it personal. Some audiences are like that. They are enjoying your gig.

Dare to be different. Play something expected, but well known that has a good vibe. Drift Away always has the older crowd singing along. And most of your gigs will have more older than younger out there having fun.

Thanks for reading the tips that have worked for me .I hope they are able to help you.
